Progressive Geraldo Alckmin, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s running mate, affirmed Thursday that it would be “better” for Brazil if the former Brazilian president won the elections in the first round to avoid “deaths”.

“I think it is better for Brazil, because it comes out of that confusion, fight, suddenly there can be deaths, there can be accidents, a tragedy can happen,” said Lula’s VP candidate, in a defiant tone during an interview with the portal UOL and the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo.

Alckmin, Lula’s former adversary, with whom he has reconciled to face the current President Jair Bolsonaro in the elections, implied that if they do not win the elections, violence and chaos will ensue in Brazil.

The current head of state said last week that he sees it “impossible” for Lula to win in the first round, as he has not shown strength in the streets.

Bolsonaro, a retired Army captain who aspires to renew his mandate for another four years, has as his vice-presidential candidate reserve general Walter Braga Netto, who was Minister of the Presidency and Minister of Defense during his government.
