The Contra Costa County, California, District Attorney’s Office filed murder charges against Ray Ray Darn, 35, and Marilyn Northington, 28, in connection with the death of their 5-week-old son.

The East Bay couple will also face charges of felony child abuse and aggravated battery of a child causing death, People magazine reports.

Both are being held in lieu of $2.2 million bail. They have not yet entered pleas.

The suspects have two other young children who were placed in the care of Child Family Services after they were arrested, police said to KRON 4 reports.

The facts

On Thursday, February 4th, police arrested the couple after the 5-week-old baby was pronounced dead when admitted to a hospital in Richmond.

At 6:30 p.m., officers responded to an emergency call from a hotel located at 3150 Garrity Way about a couple on their way to the hospital with their baby who was not breathing.

At 6:55 p.m., police received a call from the hospital about the minor who arrived at the hospital and was eventually pronounced dead.

The Richmond Police Department Homicide Unit was notified of the incident and took over the investigation, and Darn and Northington were eventually arrested in connection with the death.

The baby suffered visible injuries, including burn marks on his face, the release said. His right leg appeared broken and had been burned.

“There was a circular mark on the baby’s leg where the burn occurred,” the text from the prosecutor’s office continues. “In addition, the baby appeared severely malnourished.”

Armed with a search warrant, the Richmond Police Department went to the hotel room where they say they found drug paraphernalia, including a methamphetamine pipe and two butane lighters.

An autopsy conducted by the coroner’s office found that the victim had suffered a fractured right femur, facial scarring, dehydration and malnutrition, bruising to his upper right thigh, thermal burns to his nose and right cheek, and thermal burns to his lower body.

An internal examination by the coroner’s office found internal injuries consisting of seven fractured ribs, bleeding inside his skull and a skull fracture.
