California announced Monday that it will delay the lifting of the mask mandate until mid-June. This is reportedly in an effort to give the public time to prepare for the new guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This Monday, state Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly said in a statement that as of June 15, fully vaccinated Californians will be allowed to go without masks in most indoor settings.

Mask mandate: what do the CDC say?

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s decision comes despite new CDC guidelines last week that say people who are fully vaccinated can safely resume life without restrictions.

CDC experts said they updated their recommendations on masks and social distancing based on scientific evidence that being fully vaccinated greatly reduces the risk of getting COVID-19 or infecting others.

Ghaly said the four-week period “will give Californians time to prepare for this change as we continue our relentless focus on vaccine delivery, particularly in underserved communities.”
