The Senate confirmed on Monday Miguel Cardona as the new U.S. Secretary of Education. The bipartisan vote was 64 in favor and 33 against.

Cardona, 45, a former education commissioner in Connecticut, supports Biden’s goal of “safely reopening schools,” Fox News reports.

He will take over the Department of Education amid growing tension between Americans who support a return to the classroom and those who say there are still high risks of coronavirus contamination.

He is tasked with establishing reopening guidelines for local school districts, and helping the school address the potential negative consequences of remote learning.

Once his nomination was announced, Cardona pledged that he will do everything possible to ensure that children and youth have access to the same educational opportunities.

Cardona is one of Biden’s Hispanic cabinet member along with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Xavier Becerra, who is awaiting Senate confirmation to take over as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
