I had the pleasure of sitting down for a conversation with Florida’s 26th District Congressional Representative and former Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez. Gimenez was elected to Congress just a few months ago.
He arrived at Capitol Hill and brought with him a clear message: socialism must be stopped. Along with Maria Elvira Salazar, Nicole Malliotakis, and Victoria Spartz, he represents a retaining wall in Congress against anti-freedom ideas: the anti-socialist squad.
On the night of his win, Gimenez declared, “I reject socialism and the demons of socialism and communism.” Shortly thereafter, he said, “We know what socialism has done to nations –we escaped it. We will fight for freedom, for the American dream and for opportunity every single day.”
His commitment is palpable. As he himself has said: his family, along with him, fled the Cuban Revolution in the early 1960s. He is not willing to leave his country again.
He believes Miami has the potential to be the technological capital of the world, and the exodus of people and businessmen from big cities, today governed by Democrats (such as New York or Los Angeles), to South Florida.
We also discussed the radicalization of the Democratic Party, the liberalization policies of the economy that must be implemented, what he rescues from Trump’s legacy, and the future of the Republican Party.
“I’m not worried about the future of the Republican Party. President Trump transformed the party. We are now the party of the working class. And the Democrats are now the party of the elites, you know, Silicon Valley, the tech giants, Wall Street. That’s what the Democrats became.”
Gimenez is very optimistic about the future of Miami. He assured that it will be, by the end of the century, one of the top cities in the United States. “They’ll talk about New York, they’ll talk about Los Angeles and they’ll talk about Miami.”
This is all part of his legacy. Under his tenure as mayor, Miami began to become a sanctuary for entrepreneurship and technology. Since then, it has been developing that way and today it is one of the most attractive cities to thrive in, unlike once-wealthy cities, like New York, now taken over by obscene taxes. “We have created an ecosystem for entrepreneurs to come to Miami,” he explained.
With respect to the Democratic Party and Joe Biden’s administration, the representative fears that radical positions such as those of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez “are dictating what is happening now within the party.”
“People think that with socialism the government is going to solve problems and take care of you,” he added. “No. In fact, if you look around the world, the idea of socialism hasn’t worked.”
