For the first time in nine months, the White House admitted that Joe Biden is dealing with “multiple crises” after the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan and the arrival of Hurricane Ida which left at least 40 Americans dead.
In a meeting with the press on Friday, September 3, Karine Jean-Pierre, deputy White House press secretary, pointed out that President Joe Biden “has to deal with multiple crises at the moment”.
The assertion came after a reporter asked her about a series of recently released polls that do not favor the Democratic administration.
“Well, let me just say, I know there’s been a lot of polls and conversations about, you know, the different multiple crises the president has to deal with right now. But […] this is the role of the president, right?, to make sure that we keep working. We have addressed multiple crises at the same time,” she responded.
Jean-Pierre added that Biden’s “strong and capable team” was able to adapt quickly and work on the Afghanistan airlift to get as many people out of the country as possible. In turn, she cited as an accomplishment that the troop withdrawal became “one of the most historic airlifts that was able to happen.”
The deputy press secretary did not mention the deaths of the 13 American soldiers after the suicide attack in Kabul, nor the number of Americans stranded waiting to return to the United States.
Joe Biden’s Approval Plummets
A new NPR / PBS NewsHour / Marist poll reveals that Biden’s approval plummeted to 43%; representing a 6-point drop in a single month. The poll notes that his disapproval shot up 7 points to 51%.
41% of people said they strongly disapprove of the job Biden is doing, while only 19% strongly approve of how he is handling his job as president.
Another FiveThirtyEight poll also found that Biden’s approval rating fell below 50% this week for the first time during his presidency.
The drop in Biden’s approval rating comes after the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan following the departure of U.S. troops, resulting in American soldiers and civilians killed, as well as stranded nationals and allies still waiting to escape.
