At least 50 people were killed in a shooting in Nigeria. The incident occurred Sunday during a Mass at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo.

According to the Associated Press, Andrew Abayomi, a priest at the church, said that as the Eucharist was coming to an end, terrorists threw explosive devices and shot at the faithful.

Reactions to the events in Nigeria

AP detailed that Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, described the event as “dastardly.” “No matter what, this country shall never give in to evil and wicked people, and darkness will never overcome light. Nigeria will eventually win,” Buhari said.

The Vatican also condemned the attack. “Pope Francis prays for the victims and the country, painfully affected at a time of celebration, and entrusts them both to the Lord so that he may send his spirit to console them,” spokesman Matteo Bruni said.
