The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is considering making children under the age of 12 to wear mandatory facemasks in schools.
Despite the fact that a large part of the American population is vaccinated against COVID-19, the CDC will “probably” establish the new rule. This was reported by Joe Biden on Wednesday night, July 21.
“The CDC is going to say that what you should do is, everyone under the age of 12 should probably be wearing masks in school,” Biden said.
During the forum at Mount Saint Joseph’s University in Cincinnati, Ohio, the president also expressed frustration with the slowing rate of COVID-19 vaccination in the United States and stated that it is “gigantically important” for Americans to step up and get vaccinated against the virus as infections increase.
Biden’s announcement of the mandatory masks comes at the same time he was optimistic that a vaccine for children under 12 will be approved in the coming months.
Health officials blame the Delta variant and the slowing vaccination rates, as only 56.2 % of Americans have received at least one dose of the vaccine, according to CDC data.
Joe Biden’s announcement about making it mandatory for children to wear masks in schools comes two weeks after the CDC issued guidance stating that children who are vaccinated do not need masks inside schools.
Simply put, vaccinated children over the age of 12 would not wear masks while younger children would have their faces covered.
Florida, a state with free children without mandatory facemasks
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he opposes any attempt by the federal government to require masks among school children.
According to Sun Sentinel, DeSantis also assured that he would call the state legislature into emergency session if necessary. “We expect this next year to be a normal year, to be face-to-face and learn like normal kids,” he sentenced.
“There has been talk of potential people advocating at the federal level, imposing mandatory masks on children. We are not doing that in Florida. We need our children to breathe,” he added.
DeSantis said that the masks are “terribly” uncomfortable for children, that they restrict their breathing and that “there’s not a lot of science behind it.” He further noted that “parents obviously can equip their children to go to school however they want, but there should be no coercive mandates in our schools.”
