This Wednesday news broke that Eugene Yu, 51, CEO of Konnech, an election software company, was arrested outside Lansing, Michigan. Prosecutors accuse him of storing data on servers in China.

The information was released by the Los Angeles Times, which detailed that Yu is expected to be extradited to Los Angeles in the coming days for allegedly sharing personal information of hundreds of election workers in Los Angeles County.

According to the media outlet, district attorney Jorge Gascón explained that the county had awarded Konnech a contract in 2020 to store employee payroll and scheduling data using PollChief software.

“Konnech allegedly violated its contract by storing critical information that the workers provided on servers in China. We intend to hold all those responsible for this breach accountable,” Gascón said.

The lawyer detailed that the alleged actions of the company would have compromised the electoral integrity. According to the information, prosecutors discovered irregularities due to a separate investigation, of which no details were provided.

In a statement obtained by the Los Angeles Times, County Recorder Dean Logan said it would be a crime. “Storage of data outside the United States is a violation of County information security provisions and the strict provisions of the contract between the vendor and the County of Los Angeles,” Logan stressed.
