The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed today, Thursday, that the Asian power will hold “a high-level strategic dialogue” with President Biden’s administration, scheduled to take place in Alaska starting next 18th.

In a statement released today by the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, one of the department’s spokesmen, said that the meeting will take place “at the invitation of the United States”, a meeting whose first details were announced on Wednesday by the U.S. side.

It will be the first official meeting between the two powers since Biden came to power last January.

Despite China‘s interest in restoring relations between the world’s two largest economies (which were battered by the retaliations of former President Donald Trump after he demanded that they stop stealing intellectual property), China has not changed its premises for dealing with Washington.

The meeting will be attended by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Biden’s national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, while on the Beijing side, the head of the Communist Party of China (CPC) for Foreign Affairs, Yang Jiechi, and the head of Chinese diplomacy, Wang Yi, will attend.

The meeting in Alaska will take place at the end of a tour that Blinken will make early next week of Japan and South Korea, his two main allies in the Far East.

Neither China nor the United States detailed the topics that will be on the agenda, but it is foreseeable that the pandemic as well as environmental and economic issues will be on the agenda.
