The city of Algeciras, Spain, is in mourning. This Wednesday, a Jihadist attack killed a sacristan and wounded four other people, one of them a priest.

The attack was committed by a Moroccan in an irregular situation pending deportation to his country, but who was not registered by the police for his radicalization. Yassine Kanjaa, 25 years old, killed the sacristan with a machete after breaking into two churches and trying to enter another one, shouting “death to Christians”.

Police sources informed EFE that the detainee had “rudimentary” jihadist propaganda. “It was discovered in a search of the house where he resided, from which he emerged with a Koran in his hand,” the media outlet reviewed.

Similarly, it was also reported that the Spanish National Court is investigating the Moroccan for a crime of jihadist terrorism and plans to interrogate him in the coming days when he will be transferred to Madrid once the police interrogations are completed.

In response to the events, several personalities have spoken out against the attack and the hashtag #ChristianLivesMatter” has become a trend in social networks. Many citizens expressed that when Christians are murdered, the media and non-governmental organizations do not raise their voices.

The president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, spoke out on the situation and argued that the attack on Christian values is a real problem that must be addressed. “For many centuries, you will not see a Catholic or a Christian kill in the name of their religion or beliefs. There are other peoples who have some citizens who do,” commented the president of Spain’s main right-wing party.

He added: “We will all agree that, in general, there is not a problem of Catholic terrorism in the world. However, there is a clear problem of Islamic fundamentalism in some parts of the world”.

Christians react

The political party Vox assured that it will continue to call for the defense of Catholic culture and demanded greater control over the entry of migrants into the country. “A silent invasion of a culture incompatible with ours, which must be stopped before it is too late,” said the right-wing party.

An organization called “Catholic University Students” explained that Christians are the most persecuted community in the world and at the same time the most silenced faith.

“Christians are the most persecuted community in the world and the most silenced. Blood of martyrs, seeds of new Christians. #ChristianLivesMatter,” the organization wrote on its Twitter account.

“We have to pray for the eternal rest of the sacristan Diego Valencia, murdered yesterday in Algeciras and for the speedy recovery of the Salesian Fr. Antonio Rodriguez Lucena, parochial vicar of the parish of Maria Auxiliadora,” highlighted the organization through social media.
