Yesterday, Russia launched an attack on Ukraine after months of military tensions and after the self-proclaimed separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk asked for its help to “repel” the Ukrainian Army.

This is the chronology of the massive Russian invasion of Ukraine:

Putin Announces “Special Military Operation”

-Shortly before 06.00 Moscow time (03.00 GMT), Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a “special military operation” in Ukraine that he justified with the alleged need to pacify the conflict in the east of the country, where pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian Army have been clashing since 2014 in a conflict that has claimed the lives of at least 14,000 people so far, according to the UN.

-Russian Army initiates high-precision missile strikes against Ukrainian military infrastructure, air defense systems, airfields and weapons depots.

Stock Market Crashes

-Russia suffers a stock market crash that forces Moscow to temporarily close the stock exchange, after which the Russian government announced that additional measures will be taken to ensure its stability in the face of Western sanctions over the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

-Russia claims to have neutralized Ukraine’s anti-aircraft defenses and begins its offensive on different points of the Ukrainian border with the advance of tanks, armored vehicles and other military vehicles.

Zelensky Declares Martial Law in Ukraine

-Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky declares martial law throughout the country, breaks off diplomatic relations with Russia and calls on the Ukrainian army to inflict “as many casualties as possible” on the Russian invader.

-Ukraine mobilizes Territorial Defense Units composed of civilian volunteers to support regular forces.

-The Ukrainian Presidency admits the death of at least 40 Ukrainian servicemen as a result of Russian shelling and missile attacks.

Approximately Four Ukrainian Civilians are Killed

-At least four civilians are killed in an attack by pro-Russian separatist militia artillery on a hospital in the Donetsk region and at least 22 in a Russian air strike on a military unit in the Black Sea region of Odessa.

-Zelenski affirms that the Ukrainian Army is engaged in “heavy fighting” all over the country from “the Donbas to other regions in the east, north and south.”

-The Ukrainian leader decrees general mobilization to confront Russian aggression, subject to approval by the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament).

Donetsk and Luhansk Launch Attack on Ukrainian Forces

-Militias of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics launch an attack on Ukrainian forces with the support of Russian Army units to extend their zone of control.

-Thousands of people leave Kyiv and traffic jams are observed on the roads heading to the west of the country, while neighboring Moldova and Hungary report the arrival of numerous refugees.

Russian Forces Head to Kyiv, Ukraine’s Capital

-Russian troops cross the border just over 100 kilometers north of the Ukrainian capital as the Ukrainian Army reports multiple launcher attacks from Belarusian territory.The Russian Army crosses the Ukrainian border from Belarus and moves into the Chernobyl region, heading for Kyiv.

-The Ukrainian military command reports that fighting continues along the entire front line in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.

-The Russian Army has destroyed 74 military ground facilities during the operation it launched in Ukraine early this morning.

-Kyiv introduces curfew between 22.00 and 07.00.
