With only four days to go before the New Jersey election, a tight race remains between Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Murphy and Republican Jack Ciattarelli. According to a recent poll, the Democrat has a double-digit lead over the red party representative.

This year, voters have three ways to cast their ballot, in addition to showing up in person on Election Day Nov. 2, 2021, they can also cast their ballot in person during the first-time early voting period or use a mail-in ballot.

In this election, voters will be able to define the office of governor and the 120-member New Jersey State Legislature; the composition of the state’s General Assembly and Senate will also be at stake, as well as whether gambling will be allowed in college sports.

According to the recent Monmouth University poll, Governor Murphy has 50 % support among registered voters in New Jersey; while Ciattarelli stands at 39 % support.

Murphy’s 11-point margin over Ciattarelli in the new poll is down from a 13-point lead in a poll last month and also represents a drop from Murphy’s 16-point lead in an August poll. In the coming hours, the lead could narrow if the trend continues.

While New Jersey is a blue state where Democrats enjoy a registration advantage of about 1 million more voters than Republicans, Murphy is trying to become the first Democratic governor in more than four decades to win re-election.

The poll’s release comes two days after the governor joined President Biden at two political events in New Jersey; however the president now faces a high disapproval rating with 49 % rejecting and 43 % approval.

While the current governor seeks to extend his term, Ciattarelli who served six years in the Assembly, representing the 16th District which includes Princeton, Somerville and Flemington, proposes to reduce property taxes and implement a variety of corporate and income tax cuts. In addition, he would end the state’s “sanctuary” policies for undocumented immigrants and he opposes facemask and vaccination mandates.
