Colorado’s Democratic governor, Jared Polis, opposed the mask mandate and criticized officials who tell “people what to wear.”

Polis—who is running for re-election in 2022—believes that vaccines changed the COVID-19 landscape, so masks should no longer be mandatory, opposing the views of his Democratic counterparts in New York, California, New Mexico, Nevada and Hawaii

While NY Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that masks will be required in all indoor public places, Polis noted that vaccines currently work better than masks to prevent the spread of the virus. “Our top goal is always to follow the science, and there was a time when there was no vaccine, and masks were all we had and we needed to wear them. The truth is we now have highly effective vaccines that work far better than masks,” the governor said in an interview with CPR.org.

Polis criticized elected officials who force others to wear the mask: “You know, public health [officials] don’t get to tell people what to wear; that’s just not their job,” he added.

“You don’t tell people to wear a jacket when they go out in winter and force them to [wear it]. If they get frostbite, it’s their own darn fault. If you haven’t been vaccinated, that’s your choice. I respect that. But it’s your fault when you’re in the hospital with COVID,” he said.

The governor assured that the medical emergency is over, “Frankly, people who want to be protected [have gotten vaccinated]. Those who get sick, it’s almost entirely their own darn fault. (…) Eighty-four percent of the people in our hospitals are unvaccinated, and they absolutely had every chance to get vaccinated,” he said.

Polis is running for re-election in 2022.
