Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee, testified before British lawmakers about allegations against the tech giant, claiming that the social network misled the company’s Oversight Board and urging the British congress to “stand up and demand a more transparent relationship.”

“If Facebook can come in there and just actively mislead the Oversight Board — which is what they did — I don’t know what the purpose of the oversight board is,” she warned.

Haugen resigned in May of this year from her position at Facebook as chief product officer, in doing so, she took with her hundreds of internal documents that triggered a series of allegations; including that Facebook had knowledge that its products harmed the mental health of teenagers, encouraged ethnic violence in countries like Ethiopia, and failed to curb misinformation before the Jan. 6 riots in Washington.

Last week, the Oversight Board said Facebook had failed to provide crucial details about its “Cross-Check” program that supposedly protected millions of VIP users from content moderation rules.

This Sunday, Suzanne Nossel, Oversight Board member and CEO of PEN America, said Facebook must do a better job with transparency.

“Hate spreads on Facebook”

A new Washington Post report revealed that Facebook employees opened fictitious accounts to test the social network regarding the monitoring of misinformation; they found that none of the hate speech accounts were blocked.

“Hate spreads like wildfire on Facebook,” said Junaid, a student from Kashmir who told The Post he saw his real Facebook page flooded with hate messages.

“Internal company documents made public Saturday reveal that Facebook has meticulously studied its approach abroad — and was well aware that weaker moderation in non-English-speaking countries leaves the platform vulnerable to abuse by bad actors and authoritarian regimes,” the story said.

The report specifically alludes to India, where Facebook allowed the leak of fake news that could have led to protests and riots in that country.
