The Oakland City Council approved taking $17.4 million in funding away from the Oakland Police Department. The money would also be directed to other social programs.

CBS explained that there was some expectation that the City Council would delay the controversial decision but, by a 7-2 vote, the Oakland City Council approved the plan that will redirect funds from the Police Department to the Violence Prevention Department.

The move comes at a time when Oakland has seen an alarming increase in street violence and shootings. Meanwhile, the measure was criticized by some councilmembers.

“We can make adjustments if necessary, but, right now, we need to focus on violence prevention, affordable housing, and our homeless populations. This budget would help us move forward,” said Democratic Councilman Dan Kalb.
