Republican Congressman Ron Wright of Texas passed away Sunday, Feb. 7th weeks after being diagnosed with COVID-19, his congressional office announced Monday.

“Congressman Ron Wright passed away peacefully at the age of 67 on February 7, 2021. His wife Susan was by his side and is now in the presence of her Lord and Savior,” the statement said.

The text notes that both Wright and his wife had remained for the previous two weeks at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

Wright is the first sitting member of Congress to die after contracting coronavirus. In December, Congressman-elect Luke Letlow died after being diagnosed with the disease, days before his inauguration.

Wright was re-elected to his seat in November 2020.

“As his friends, family and many of his constituents will know, Ron maintained his quick wit and optimism to the end,” the Congressman’s office said.

It added: “Despite years of painful and sometimes debilitating cancer treatment, Ron never lacked the desire to get up and go to work, to motivate those around him or to offer fatherly advice.”

Wright, 67, tested positive for COVID-19 in late January. According to his office he was experiencing minor symptoms of the virus. In 2018 the Republican was diagnosed with lung cancer.
