North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr could be censured by state GOP leaders.

The move would come after voting Saturday to convict former President Donald Trump for inciting insurrection over the assault on the Capitol.

According to The Associated Press, North Carolina Republican Party spokesman Tim Wigginton said the GOP central committee will vote this Monday night.

The vote of censure comes after the group condemned him for joining six other Republicans who favored condemning Trump.

Trump was acquitted after the upper chamber voted to convict him 57-43. A two-thirds majority was needed to achieve conviction.

North Carolina Republican officials also said it was disappointing that Burr chose to go against Trump. “North Carolina Republicans sent Sen. Burr to the U.S. Senate to defend the Constitution,” North Carolina Republican Chairman Michael Whatley said in a Saturday press release.

“And his vote today to convict in a trial he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” he highlighted.

Also voting to convict Trump were other Republican Senators – Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska and Patrick Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Burr’s vote was somewhat surprising given that he had previously voted that the impeachment was unconstitutional.

Although Burr has already announced that he will not run for re-election in 2022, and thus will not face the voters again, the vote underscores his party’s dissatisfaction with his decision and makes Burr, the latest member of that group to face a vote of no confidence from his state party.
