Israel has experienced an upsurge in violence in recent days. The country has denounced the terrorist attack by Hamas. To analyze and learn how the situation is developing, Orlando Avendaño, Editor-in-chief of El American, spoke with the Deputy Consul General of Israel in the Southeastern United States, Alex Gandler.

“What’s happening now is that the terrorist group, Hamas, has control of the Gaza Strip. It took it by force in 2007 from their Palestinian brothers, the Fatah, and is now controlling the Gaza Strip, is attacking Israel together with other factions and terrorist organizations such as the Palestinian Islamic Jihad,” Gandler said.

Similarly, the Deputy Consul General of Israel explained that Israelis and Palestinians can coexist, and more than that, he argued that Jews and Muslims can coexist just as Jews and Christians do.

“There is coexistence in Israel. These are very troubled times and troubling things are happening in Israel as well. But as I said, this is the Hamas terrorist organization taking the Palestinian people hostage and using them as human shields and as a political tool to gain power, influence, and money over the Fatah and the Palestinian authority,” he asserted.

He also stressed that, in his opinion, the Palestinian Authority is receiving very generous donations from many countries. For this reason, he commented that Hamas wants to take control of the territories as the Palestinian president suspended the elections called for this year.

“The Palestinian Authority is getting very generous donations from many, many countries, especially from the European Union. Many NGOs are funded that way, and the Palestinian Authority itself, which is the governing body of the Palestinians, is also funded exactly that way. They are getting quite large sums of money. And Hamas wants to take exactly over that position.”

He also referred to the support of the international community to Israel and also recalled that the United States maintains good relations with the Israeli government. He maintained that Israel is fulfilling its right to defend itself against a terrorist organization.

“Well, we are seeing that a large number of countries around the world support Israel. Also in different regions. There are also those that don’t support Israel and are automatically with the Palestinians without even looking at the facts or the data. Most countries support and understand what Israel is doing. Israel is fighting a terrorist organization.”
