The Supreme Court ordered last Tuesday that Joe Biden reinstate Trump’s border policy. Specifically, it refers to the one known as “Remain in Mexico“. The measure forces people coming from Mexico to wait in Mexican territory until their immigration hearings.

Back in April, the states of Texas and Missouri sued the Biden administration, arguing that reversing the policy led to a surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border that imposed costs on both states.

Border policy and Biden’s decision

Trump’s policy was put into effect in 2019 through a memo from then-Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen. According to CNN, an estimated 68,000 migrants were returned to Mexico under the policy.

The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, referred to the measure and assured that the Court’s decision will reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the state and throughout the country. He also stated that it would “halt” on Biden’s immigration measures.

The Biden-Harris administration has been facing an immigration crisis since they took office. This is due to their promise to have open border policies, which caused thousands of Central American citizens to migrate to the United States illegally.

Months ago, Greg Abbott had warned that the Democratic administration was not prepared for an open border policy and described the situation as a “humanitarian crisis” due to the poor conditions at the border crossing.
