The current immigration crisis under the Biden administration is worsening, with hundreds of migrants infected with COVID-19 and in unsanitary conditions during their stay in detention centers.
The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, informed on Friday, March 19, that in Midland, one of the migrant detention centers, 10% of the detained population had tested positive for coronavirus, while “they have no clean running water tested on site”, which is drawn from a well “that the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has not proven to be safe.”
Abbott noted that what is happening at the border is a true “crisis” and “a humanitarian disaster,” and reported that at Carrizo Springs, another detention center, the same percentage of migrants have also tested positive for COVID-19. “This is happening during the course of a pandemic and is endangering lives as we speak,” he said.
According to Abbott’s allegations, authorities have even released 100 undocumented migrants in Texas who tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).
The governor, who has consistently denounced a “vacuum” of control by the federal government, described the situation at the border as a “humanitarian crisis”, and announced that as a measure he will increase efforts to investigate and combat human traffickers who help migrant children cross into the United States illegally.
“Americans need to know if these children were mistreated in any way. They need to know if these children were assisted, coerced or threatened by cartel members or human traffickers […] All of this is vital information that can help the United States combat these human traffickers and prevent other children from being victimized,” said the governor.
Migration crisis
More than 14,000 migrant minors who crossed the border with Mexico alone remain in the custody of U.S. government agencies.
According to The Texas Tribune, approximately 1 in 10 undocumented immigrants encountered by immigration officials in February were unaccompanied minors. This is a 62% increase over January.
Earlier this month, Abbott announced he would deploy more resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to secure the border. On Wednesday, he said he was expanding that effort, called Operation Lone Star, to combat human trafficking.
Was Trump right?
Last Thursday, March 18, it was learned that the Biden-Harris administration is reportedly pressuring Mexico to stem the flow of migrants seeking to enter the United States to mitigate the immigration crisis.
A report by The New York Times revealed that Biden -like Trump- asked AMLO if more could be done to help solve the problem.
The NYT report matches with a statement by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who said on Tuesday that he was “working with Mexico to increase its capacity to receive expelled families.”
