Despite the fact that the Biden administration continues to fail to control the border crisis, it is considering facilitating legal immigration to the country. It would do so by expanding access routes for foreign citizens.

This Monday, The New York Times published a document to which it has had exclusive access, detailing the administration’s plan.

The draft is dated May 3 and outlines the Biden administration’s possible actions to expand the legal immigration system.

The draft is divided into seven sections. It sets out detailed proposals to facilitate the entry of different types of immigrants, such as skilled and agricultural workers or family members of Americans living abroad, as well as asylum seekers.

Biden’s decision comes in the midst of an unprecedented immigration crisis. In fact, two weeks ago, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich asked Biden to replace Kamala Harris as “border czar”. This on the grounds that after several weeks in office Harris has ignored the border crisis.

In April, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that migrant arrests at the border reached their highest level in 20 years. In addition, it detailed in a report that there was an increase of 71% compared to last month.

The 46-page document indicates that Biden’s priority is to reduce the process for foreigners. According to the media, the measure aims to restore opportunities for foreign skilled workers through the H-1B visa program, create new avenues for entrepreneurs who want to invest in the United States and facilitate asylum for victims of domestic violence.

The Times explained that the backlog of pending citizenship applications increased by 80% since 2014.
