A nine-year-old migrant boy died after being found unconscious by border agents in the Rio Grande River, which divides the United States from Mexico, it was reported Thursday.

The boy was found with his mother and a 3-year-old brother, both also unconscious, on an island on the Mexican side of the river in the Del Rio (Texas) area on the 20th, according to a statement from the U.S. Border Patrol.

The agents administered first aid and transferred the migrants to U.S. territory, where the woman and the youngest child regained consciousness.

The other child, however, did not awaken and was later pronounced dead by medical professionals in Eagle Pass, Texas.

The Border Patrol did not provide further details on the cause of death or the circumstances of the incident. The mother is a Guatemalan national and her two children are Mexican nationals.

According to government sources quoted by the media, the Border Patrol has about 5,000 minors in its custody, while the Department of Health shelters are currently taking in some 15,000 children who have crossed unaccompanied by their parents or legal guardian.

In recent weeks, there has been an increase in the arrival of migrants, many of them unaccompanied minors or families. Since Biden took office, thousands of migrants have moved to the border under the promise made by the Democrats that they will be received, which has caused a serious migratory crisis.
