Republican Senator Ted Cruz announced Friday that he will introduce legislation to prohibit the federal government and employers from forcing Americans to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Similarly, the measure is also intended to prevent vaccine passports.

“I think vaccines are fabulous. I myself got vaccinated. I think it’s given us a lot of freedom, but I think there’s a real potential for government overreach,” Cruz said in a video posted on his Twitter account.

Cruz added no one should be forced to be vaccinated. He argued that it should be a personal choice. “I have introduced legislation this week that, number one, would prohibit any federal vaccine passport, would prohibit the Biden administration from doing anything to mandate vaccines.”

Other bans in place

Cruz is not the first Republican to oppose the vaccine passport. Arizona’s governor, in early April, reportedly signed an Executive Order banning the use of vaccine passports in the state. Similar actions have been taken by Ron DeSantis, Governor of Florida and Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas.

The governors’ decision comes after the White House reported that it was considering the use of an ID document certifying that a citizen received the COVID-19 vaccine. However, Jen Psaki, spokesperson for President Joe Biden detailed that such a document would not be mandatory.

“There will be no federal mandate for vaccine passports,” said Psaki.
