Oz Fetterman

After months of back and forth, campaign dishonesty, and a questionable medical report, John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz finally faced off in a debate. Those in attendance witnessed mutual attacks, shouting, and some answers from the Pennsylvania Senate candidates that went viral. In the end, according to most media and political betting, there was a clear winner: Mehmet Oz.

The contrasts were seen as the debate began, as each used his first intervention to do exactly the opposite. John Fetterman ruthlessly attacked his opponent. He claimed to be ready to “serve Pennsylvania” and added that the Republican seeks to “use Pennsylvania.” He called him a liar and, unsurprisingly, mentioned that the surgeon lived in New Jersey.

John Fetterman and Mehmet Oz participated in the first and only debate in the Pennsylvania Senate elections (EFE).

For his part, Oz opened his performance by telling voters why they should elect him to serve in the Senate. “Washington keeps getting it wrong with extreme positions. I want to bring civility, balance (…) and, by doing that, we can bring us together in a way that has not been done of late,” he began.

Seconds later, he made it clear what his main topic was going to be that night: crime. “John Fetterman, during this crime wave, has been trying to get as many murderers, convicted and sentenced to life in prison, out of jail as possible,” the Republican candidate added.

Economy

One of the main subjects of the debate was the economy, particularly inflation. Oz was the first in this round and stated that his intention is to lower taxes and reduce the public deficit. Fetterman said he was committed to reducing inflation, although he did not explain how he would do it and spent his time attacking his opponent. “Dr. Oz can’t possibly understand what that (inflation) is like. He has 10 gigantic mansions. We must push back against corporate greed and price-gouging too,” said the state’s current lieutenant governor.

Then, Fetterman was unequivocal in stating that he would support raising the minimum wage in the keystone state from $7.25 to $15 an hour, while Oz argued that the market should be in charge of determining wages, not the federal government.

Abortion

Oz stated that he does not want the federal government to interfere in how states legislate the abortion issue and that the states are in charge of voting on their own laws. To reinforce his point, he assured that he would not vote in favor of the bill proposed by Lindsey Graham (R) to restrict access to abortion throughout the country.

Fetterman spoke “directly to women,” on several occasions calling for the codification of Roe v. Wade.

The viral moment of the debate between Oz and Fetterman.

When it came time to talk about energy, a moderator asked the Democrat to clarify his position on fracking. “You have made two conflicting statements regarding fracking,” the moderator said. “In a 2018 interview, you said quote, ‘I don’t support fracking at all. I never have.’ But earlier this month, you told an interviewer, quote, ‘I support fracking. I support the energy independence that we should have here in the United States.'”

After Fetterman’s answer generated more doubts than certainties, the moderator gave him another opportunity to clarify his position on the matter.

“I do support fracking. And I don’t, I don’t. I support fracking,” Fetterman responded. “And I stand and I do support fracking,” the Democrat responded a second time.

Closing moment

Organizers gave each candidate 90 seconds to speak directly to voters and convince them to join them in November.

Fetterman invoked the “forgotten community” in Pennsylvania and reviewed his career in the public sector to demonstrate management experience. Instead, Oz talked about inflation and crime, before paraphrasing the famous shutdown Ronald Reagan used against Jimmy Carter in 1980.

“Are you unhappy with where America is heading? I am. And if you are as well, then, I’m the candidate for change” the Republican concluded.

Who won the debate?

A fairly accurate way to measure these things is through bookmakers. Who could be more honest than someone who bets their own money by guessing election results?

Prior to the debate, the betting was virtually even. However, once the lights went out and the event came to an end, Mehmet Oz experienced a huge surge in wagers on his name, which is quite indicative in terms of determining the winner of the first and only Senate debate in Pennsylvania, which will be decided on November 8.
