Vice President Kamala Harris assured on Monday that the government will reinforce the U.S. borders. In her visit to Guatemala, she sent a message to illegal migrants and asked them not to travel to the border because they will be sent back to their countries.

“Do not come because we are going to secure our border. If you come to the border, you will be turned around and sent back to your country,” Harris said.

Harris’ statements were criticized by members of the Democratic Party as a policy that is not humane. For example, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Harris’ message disappointed her.

“First, seeking asylum at any US border is a 100% legal method of arrival.,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.

Similarly, she noted that the U.S. bears responsibility for the political and economic situation facing the region. “the US spent decades contributing to regime change and destabilization in Latin America. We can’t help set someone’s house on fire and then blame them for fleeing,” she asserted.

Ocasio-Cortez’s message was echoed by fellow Democrat Rashida Tlaib. A senior editor of the Washington Post agreed with this position, who emphasized that, in his opinion, illegal migrants decide to take this path because they have no other option.

“People are legally allowed to claim asylum at the border. This is not a humane policy. This is more of the same,” he commented on Twitter.

Harris visits Central America

Kamala Harris’ visit is part of Joe Biden’s strategy to address irregular immigration to his country especially from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

In this sense, she informed that the United States will create a regional task force, with emphasis on the north of Central America, to stop the “smuggling of migrants and human trafficking”.

The task force will have the support of the State Department and will allow for “intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement action planning”.
