Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) responded Wednesday to a message from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) (D-NY), who said that acknowledging an escalation of the border crisis would be to support the idea of white supremacy.
“It’s a Biden border crisis. It’s a humanitarian crisis,” Cruz tweeted. “It’s a health crisis. It’s a national security crisis. And Democrats are desperately trying to cover it up.”
AOC published a video in which it asserted that what is happening at the border crossing is about children and not a crisis. In her view, to denounce the situation would be to follow a supremacist ideal, which led to Ted Cruz’s reaction.
“This is not a surge. These are children. And they are not insurgents. We’re not being invaded, which, by the way, is a white supremacist idea,” the congresswoman said in the video.
Irregular migration from Central America to the United States has grown in recent months and has collapsed the reception system, especially after the Joe Biden-Kamala Harris administration reversed some of the measures taken by former President Donad Trump to handle the flow of migrants to the U.S.
This has begun to generate criticism of the Biden-Harris administration such as that espoused by Ted Cruz. The main one focuses on the situation of minors who in recent weeks have crossed the border and have had to stay longer than allowed by law in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) centers designed for adults, not for children or adolescents.
According to government sources, quoted by EFE, CBP has in its custody about 5,000 minors, while Department of Health shelters currently house about 15,000 children and adolescents who have crossed the border without the company of their parents or a legal guardian.
