Just 10 months ago Joe Biden won the U.S. Presidency. Biden won the state of Virginia by 10 points. However, now that VA statewide’s elections are approaching, Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic candidate for governor, is facing a very close election race against opponent Republican Glenn Youngkin.

The Democratic Party is pulling out all the stops to try to win the election. Figures such as Barack Obama, Kamala Harris and Joe Biden have traveled to Virginia to support the candidate and try to sway voters just in the final stretch. But, the latest general polls leave Biden in a very bad position and that could influence the results in Virginia.

Recent polls show the Democratic candidate narrowly ahead of the Republican candidate, a situation that could change in the coming hours.

According to The Hill, the race became a litmus test for President Biden as the White House can test the political climate of voters in key states.

An AP report notes that McAuliffe’s team is concerned about Biden’s “weakened standing among voters.”

The elections in Virginia on Tuesday, November 2, will define the office of governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and the 100 members of the House of Delegates to the General Assembly, and could also define the national political landscape related to Biden’s leadership.

That the president won with a 10 percentage point lead, and that now his gubernatorial candidate is dealing with a very close campaign, demonstrates the growing discontent against the Democratic administration.

For Republicans, a Glenn Youngkin victory would be a burst of confidence and a roadmap to break through ahead of the 2022 midterm elections, which will decide control of Congress and dozens of state legislatures.

“McAuliffe faces strong headwinds in a state that has historically selected governors from the party that is not in the White House and with a Democratic president whose approval rating is underwater,” said Rebecca Bromley-Trujillo, research director at the Wason Center, following a poll showing most Republicans’ enthusiasm to turn out to vote.

About 80% of possible Republican voters said they were “very enthusiastic” about voting in this election compared to 65% of Democrats. This happens while polls put McAuliffe only 1% ahead of his opponent.

McAuliffe’s “nervous” campaign in Virginia

In the last hours, some actions were revealed that showed McAuliffe’s desperation to win the elections.

A Fox News report revealed this Thursday, October 28, that McAuliffe’s campaign spent nearly $60,000 to hire a high-profile attorney known for representing Democrats and planning some election-related legal challenges.

It also came to light that the candidate spent nearly $100,000 on propaganda from fake news websites promoted on Facebook to influence Virginia voters.

On Sunday, October 24, Axios spoke with McAuliffe about his campaign and noted that his attitude “has taken on an air of tension, bordering on panic.”

McAuliffe previously showed some agitation on Tuesday, October 19, when he abruptly ended an interview on the local Virginia television. “You should have asked better questions from the beginning. You should have asked questions your viewers care about,” the Democratic candidate told the reporter as he got up to leave.
