Democrats Have Everything to Lose With the Raid on Trump

Leer en Español

Gas prices are going down, and inflation is still up, but it seems that the worse has passed.

Due to a combination of factors, including shaky candidates, mildly improving conditions in the country, and the Democrats’ ability to separate their candidates from Biden’s low popularity ratings, it seemed that the GOP may not obtain the expected result in the midterms. They are still poised to win the House, and only a catastrophe may turn the tables, but the Senate is pretty much in play.

However, the DOJ just made a move that might mobilize the Republican base to unseen levels. Yes, they raided Mar-a-Lago.

I don’t intend to discuss the legal details of the raid–my colleagues have done a great job to that end, but merely the optics. As of now, there’s still no public explanation of the reason for the raid, and even Democrats, such as the disgraced former NY Gov., Andrew Cuomo, are asking the Biden administration to publicly provide an explanation, as they fear it might be perceived as political persecution.

And that’s exactly how it’s being perceived—with good reason.

This will anger and mobilize the Republican base, and even some independents, even more for the midterms. Trump was still a significant figure within the GOP, but some of his endorsements weren’t doing so well, and it seemed he might be preparing for a tough Republican primary.

Now the FBI and the DOJ basically kick-started Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. And with the optics of the raid, Biden’s disapproval ratings, and a recession starting, even moderate Republicans and independents that abandoned Trump in 2020 and after J-6, may consider supporting the former president.

After he was slowly fading away in relevance for independents and some Republicans, Democrats just gave Trump a way to stay relevant for a long time as a political martyr.

What if the Democrats achieve their ultimate goal, which is not allowing Trump to run in 2024? Albeit highly unlikely, They just turn him into the kingmaker with a very motivated, outraged Republican base against – probably – a senile, unpopular president. Whoever Trump chooses to give his blessing, whether DeSantis, his son, Josh Hawley, or anyone else, will have the full support of both the MAGA movement and the Republican establishment.

Since the 2020 campaign, the political elites in America decided Donald Trump would never be president again. They may achieve that goal, but while at it, they may turn him and the GOP into something bigger.
