House Democrats Vote Against Medical Care for Babies Born Alive After Attempted Abortions

210 Democratic lawmakers voted against legislation aimed at guaranteeing immediate medical care for babies born alive after an attempted abortion, Fox News reported Thursday.

Despite a “no” vote by Democrats, the legislation passed with Republican votes. The law, called the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, establishes that any baby born alive after an attempted abortion is a legal person for all purposes under U.S. law.

Republicans defend the legislation

According to media reports, only one Democrat voted in favor of the bill, Repr. Henry Cuellar of Texas. Another Democrat, Rep. Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, voted present.

“House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Republicans of introducing the bill as part of their march to criminalize abortion care, to impose a nationwide ban, to put government-mandated pregnancies on the books,” Fox News said.

Meanwhile, Republicans insisted that the measure is being taken because all children born deserve equal treatment. “It’s simple. Babies born alive after an abortion are children, they are children. All newborns deserve the same level of care,” explained Republican Rep. Jim Jordan.
