A REPORT came out Monday detailing that the City of Denver plans to give out free phones and $12,000 to homeless women and transgender and “non-binary” people.

The policy would be implemented over the next year and is part of a partnership with a local organization. It would involve a budget of at least $1.7 million, which would come from a $2 million American Rescue Plan fund — under a plan approved by the City Council, Axios reported.

Denver’s initiative

“The Denver Basic Income Project is an opportunity to explore how the philanthropic community and the private sector can increase public support for those living in poverty, particularly our homeless neighbors, and extend that hand toward stability,” Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said in a statement obtained by the news outlet.

Axios also explained that Denver Basic Income Project founder Mark Donovan told him that most of the funding for the effort comes from charities, including the Colorado Health Foundation and the Denver Foundation.

“Nelson added that the city wants to use the federal money to alleviate the compounding effect the pandemic had on Denver’s homeless and families, whom Nelson noted often have a harder time finding safe, inclusive shelter options in the metro area,” Axios noted.
