On Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) held a meeting at the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora in Miami to discuss the historic wave of protests that have taken place in Cuba since Sunday against the communist dictatorship of the Castro brothers and Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Alongside DeSantis were Cuban-Americans Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar, both congressional representatives from South Florida, Republican FL Senator Ileana Garcia, and Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez.

Governor DeSantis affirmed that Cubans “are revolting against a corrupt communist dictatorship that has ruled that island with an iron fist for over 60 years,” and not against the lack of COVID-19 vaccines, as many have claimed without evidence, nor against a tangential problem.

“They are responsible for death and destruction, not just on the island of Cuba but really throughout the western hemisphere, with their actions supporting other Marxist regimes,” the governor said of Cuba’s dictators.

DeSantis also criticized the Cuban regime’s move to cut off the Internet on the island in order to prevent residents from communicating with the outside world and sharing information about the protests.

In this regard, DeSantis called on private companies based in Florida to “look for options” to provide satellite Internet to Cubans.

For her part, Republican Senator Ileana Garcia addressed Cubans in exile and asked them to “remain calm” and “lead with example”. “We cannot allow anything to go wrong,” she said.
