Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis on Thursday proposed a pilot program to allow businesses to pay state tariffs in cryptocurrencies, an initiative with which he plans to include digital currencies in his state’s budget.

Part of the project, according to DeSantis, is to explore ways to use blockchain technology for vehicle titles, with the support of the Department of Highways, Safety and Motor Vehicles, as well as for Medicaid payments.

“Our view as the state government is this is something that we welcome and we want to make sure that the state government is crypto-friendly,” DeSantis said during Florida’s budget presentation.

Florida toward cryptocurrencies

During the budget presentation, DeSantis said South Florida has been a gathering place for enthusiasts, so he is looking to make sure the “sunshine state” is inclusive of new technologies like blockchain.

But, DeSantis isn’t the only one embracing the growing cryptocurrency industry in Florida, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said in November he is willing to take his paycheck in Bitcoin.

In the same Twitter thread, Francis congratulated Democrat Eric Adams on his election victory in New York and encouraged him to a “friendly competition” to make their respective cities the “cryptocurrency capitals” of the country.
