Rep. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, clarified Monday that government agencies will also be fined $5,000 if they ever require proof of vaccination from their users, employees or clients, which is a violation of state law.

“If a government agency in the state of Florida forces a vaccine as a condition of employment, that violates Florida law and you will face a $5,000 fine for every single violation,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis’ remarks come in response to President Joe Biden’s announcement of a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination mandate for businesses with more than 100 workers, which would affect nearly 100 million Americans.

The governor, who considers Biden’s mandate “intrusive and illegal,” referred to the law known as SB 2006, enacted by his office in May, which prevents public and private entities from requiring proof of vaccination for employees, users and clients, and which is complemented by the Executive Order signed by DeSantis in April to prohibit the issuance of vaccination passports for Floridians.

In that regard, the state Department of Health issued a rule imposing a $5,000 fine on entities, businesses, schools and government agencies that violate SB 2006.

“We’re here today to make it very clear that we are going to stand for the men and women who are serving us. We’re going to protect Florida jobs. We are not going to let people be fired because of a vaccine,” DeSantis said. “We are not going to let people be fired because of a vaccine mandate,” he continued.

The rule will become effective this Thursday and, although the sanctioned entities may appeal the fine, the sanctions will expire within 30 days.
