The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, presented on Thursday an initiative to combat the progression of covid-19 through treatments with monoclonal antibodies that offer drugs such as Regeneron.

From Jacksonville, the governor announced the launch in this northeast Floridian city of a “rapid response unit” in which this “life-saving” treatment will be provided, he said, very effective in the early stages of the disease and for high-risk people.

“These treatments have proven successful, with clinical trials resulting in a 70% reduction in hospitalization and death in covid-19 patients,” DeSantis said.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted an emergency authorization that gave the green light to these treatments in November 2020, a month after it was used by then-President Donald Trump when he was infected with covid-19 in October 2020.

DeSantis acknowledged that the overwhelming majority of those hospitalized are unvaccinated people, but there are others who are vaccinated who are still infected, hence the importance of these treatments, which are not well known by the population and are valid for people over 12 years of age.
