California Republican Representative Devin Nunes will resign from Congress at the end of the year to head former President Donald Trump’s new telecommunications company.

In an official statement released Monday, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) announced that the Republican representative will serve as the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) starting in January 2022. The company will govern the former president’s new social network, Truth Social.

Nunes, a strong Trump supporter

“Congressman Devin Nunes is a fighter and a leader,” commented former President Trump in the release. “He will make an excellent CEO of TMTG. Devin understands that we must stop the liberal media and Big Tech from destroying the freedoms that make America great.”

For his part, Nunes comments in the release that “the time has come to reopen the Internet and allow for the free flow of ideas and expression without censorship.”

“The United States of America made the dream of the Internet a reality and it will be an American company that restores the dream,” Nunes said in the missive. “I’m humbled and honored President Trump has asked me to lead the mission and the world class team that will deliver on this promise.”

Nunes, who was one of President Trump’s biggest supporters during his tenure, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the waning days of the last Republican administration.

At the time, Trump praised Nunes for his “courageous actions” in the face of special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged Russian collusion in the 2016 presidential election, and thanked him for helping to “thwart a plot to take down a sitting United States president.”
