Donald Glover used his Twitter account to call out cancel culture and its negative impact on the quality of movies and TV shows.

“We’re getting boring stuff and not even experimental mistakes because people are afraid of getting cancelled,” wrote Donald Glover, after hearing several people in his work complain that they were sick of reviewing boring series and films.

According to Glover, filmmakers, gripped by the fear of being canceled, “feel they can only experiment with aesthetics.” He added that there are also those who don’t experiment because they simply “know they’re not that good.”

Donald Glover is one of the most versatile and influential young artists. Not only does he excel as an actor, but he is also a singer, dancer, screenwriter, director, and producer.

He began his career in television in 2006, as a screenwriter for the series 30 Rock, for which he was awarded the Writers’ Guild of America Award. At the same time, he began a musical career as a singer under stage name Childish Gambino. He rose to fame with his character Troy Barnes in the series Community, which he left to produce, write and star in his own series, Atlanta, which is still on the air.

His most important film roles have been that of the young Lando Calrissian in the movie Solo: A Star Wars Story, and the voice of Simba in the latest version of The Lion King. Not only has he served as a filmmaker and singer, but he has also been the “creative advisor” to Democrat Andrew Yang’s campaign.

This positioning of such a close collaborator of Andrew Yang may hint at a growing opposition within the Democratic ranks towards woke and cancel culture.

It should not be forgotten that the stifling censorship being carried out by platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, is largely sustained by cancel culture, since its basic postulate — anyone who is offended, has the right to a safe place — is the one that feeds and legitimizes the measures taken by social media platforms.

So far, the Democratic Party has been the most benefited by this phenomenon, and perhaps that is why it has been aligning itself with the woke culture, not only keeping silent, but even promoting it.

However, from the left itself, more and more voices are already beginning to argue against cancel culture. These voices warn that, although in the short term it may have been beneficial for them, its long-term consequences may be harmful to the party and, above all, for society as a whole.

Donald Glover and other celebrities against cancel culture

Donald Glover has highlighted one of the negative consequences of cancel culture for film, but a number of other artists have also taken up the cultural battle recently.

In the world of popular culture, there seems to be quite a movement brewing against this prevailing philosophy. Few celebrities dared to take a stand against it, beyond those who were victims of the leftist movement, who sometimes even ended up asking for forgiveness. However, more and more celebrities are warning of the dangers to freedom of expression and art, without having experienced it and even at the risk of becoming targets.

Matthew McConaughey, John Cleese, John Dolmayan, Pitbull, Bill Burr, Bill Maher, or Willie Colón are some of the most recognizable names that have publicly positioned themselves against this woke fashion, defending freedom of speech in general, and the creative freedom of artists in particular.
