Dune, the film directed by Denis Villeneuve, grossed $40.1 million this weekend in its theatrical release, despite the fact that it was also available on the HBO Max television platform at no extra charge.
The feature film thus achieved the best theatrical opening for Warner Bros. since the studio decided to release all of its titles simultaneously on television and in theaters because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Denis Villeneuve’s new adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel has received very positive reviews both for its spectacular sci-fi atmosphere and for the performances of the cast led by Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Fergurson, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Javier Bardem.
In markets such as France, Spain, Germany, and Italy, “Dune” has been one of the most successful releases of the year, grossing over 200 million worldwide, although the film arrived in European countries a month earlier than in the United States.
The film’s good publicity has encouraged audiences to go to the cinemas, although it is over two and a half hours long and has a sequel yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, Wes Anderson, one of the “indie” public’s fetish directors, broke the record for grosses per session with “The French Dispatch.”
The director’s latest film opened this weekend in just 52 theaters in North America, where it grossed 1.3 million dollars with an average of 25,000 dollars per screening, according to Box Office Mojo.
The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, is inspired by the French “nouvelle vague” and stars Benicio del Toro, Léa Seydoux, Adrien Brody and Timothée Chalamet.
Among the rest of the lineup were “Halloween Kills”, which grossed 14.5 million dollars in its second week; “No Time to Die”, which added 11.8 million, and “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, which surpassed 9 million in its first month in theaters.
