The billionaire behind SpaceX and soon-to-be owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, said Wednesday that former President Donald Trump’s social network, Truth Social, exists solely as a response to the censorship that took place on Twitter prior to his acquisition.

The night before, Musk had tweeted a screenshot of the ranking of most popular apps in the Apple Store, where Truth Social topped the list over Twitter and TikTok.

“Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech,” Musk tweeted in response to the earlier tweet. Jokingly, the entrepreneur added that Trump’s platform should be called “Trumpet.”

Trump stays at Truth Social

Truth Social is an initiative of former President Trump to fight Big Tech media hegemony and selective censorship against conservative voices. The social network was announced in October 2021 and launched on February 22, 2022.

Trump came up with the idea after social media platforms permanently blocked him after January 6. Following Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, Truth Social was the most downloaded app of the week in the United States.

Despite speculation that Trump might return to Twitter under Musk, the former Republican president ruled out that possibility on Fox News. “I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” Trump told the outlet. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”
