On Thursday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a new package of 376 million dollars in humanitarian aid for Venezuelans in Venezuela and other countries to alleviate the migratory crisis in the region.
In a statement, Blinken said that this funding would go to programs for food, shelter, access to health, water sanitation, hygiene, and protection of vulnerable groups such as women, youth, indigenous people, and the LGBT community.
The leader of US diplomacy said that this package is part of the commitments agreed at the Summit of the Americas in June in Los Angeles, where some twenty countries of the continent decided to cooperate in curbing migratory flows.
Of the $376 million, some $181 million will be distributed through the State Department’s Office of Migration and more than $194 million through USAID.
According to the Department of State, more than seven million vulnerable people are inside Venezuela and 6.8 million Venezuelans in 17 countries.
With the new package, US humanitarian aid to Venezuelans since 2017 totals $2.7 billion.
