The southern border of the United States has become a kind of strainer where migrants, mostly from Central and South America, pass through illegal routes to reach U.S. soil. Along the way, they leave rafts and bracelets used by human smuggling cartels.

In a special coverage by El American to get an up-close look at the severity of the border crisis, Anthony Cabassa arrived in Rome and La Joya in Texas where he was able to observe how more than 300 illegal immigrants crossed the border.

“Many come from Honduras and Guatemala, but we also saw from Nicaragua, Peru and Venezuela; the journey takes 1 to 3 months to reach the United States,” Cabassa reported.

He also explained that many coyotes (term used to describe human traffickers) help migrants cross the Rio Grande with small rafts on which they ride dozens of people.

Cabassa reported that, in La Joya, Border Patrol officials detained at least 65 illegal migrants. Among those detained were newborns with their parents and several unaccompanied minors.
