The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to fully approve the Pfizer vaccine next week. This would make it the first COVID-19 vaccine to be fully and formally licensed.

The information was disseminated by Politico and was quickly replicated by other media such as Bloomberg or The New York Times. According to the media, a recent survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that at least 30% of those not yet vaccinated say they would be more likely to receive a fully approved vaccine than one licensed for emergency use.

Pfizer Vaccine Authorization

The decision to fully authorize the drug would come after the federal government expressed its intention to begin administering a third dose of the coronavirus vaccine on September 20 for those who received the second injection eight months earlier.

There are currently three vaccines authorized for emergency use in the United States, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which require two doses, and the J&J single-dose vaccine.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines use messenger RNA technology, which is a kind of code that the vaccine delivers to cells. This code serves as an instruction manual for the immune system to learn to recognize the coronavirus and attack it.
