The period for submitting applications for food assistance in Puerto Rico through the Pandemic EBT program for the 2020-2021 school year ends at midnight on Monday, May 31.

The information was confirmed by Carmen Ana González Magaz, secretary of the Department of the Family, who said that the agency distributed $456 million in benefits for the feeding of 336,449 minor students through the program since August 2020.

She noted that active students in the School Meals program during the current student period, who have remained studying virtually in a school of the public system or in an institution that is part of the School Meals program of the Department of Education have until midnight tonight to submit their application through the pr.gov/pebt portal.

“We want to ensure that all eligible families have completed their application and can benefit from this food assistance for the 2020-2021 school year. Any application for benefits that meets the deadline of being completed before midnight tonight, Monday, May 31, 2021, will be processed,” the secretary said, according to El Vocero.

She added: “This assistance has been instrumental in providing great relief to families whose children remained studying from home, in new scenarios for all.”

Guaranteed food assistance in Puerto Rico

Alberto Fradera Vázquez, administrator of the Family Socioeconomic Development Administration (ADSEF), affirmed that any pending claims or payments from the Pandemic EBT program will be granted accordingly.

“The resources are secure and current. Likewise, the Assistance Center at 787-705-8350 and the P-EBT task force will continue to be active. We continue to serve Puerto Rican families on a daily basis, particularly from institutions that entered data into the system in months subsequent to the start of the program, and we will continue to reconcile any discrepancies so that the benefits arrive in full,” he said.

“We will continue to be active in making disbursements with the urgency that the emergency warrants. These resources continue to support the good nutrition of students, as the assistance can be used for a period of six months after disbursement,” the ADSEF administrator said.

He reminded families that benefits are automatically reflected on the Family Card and that the status of resources and transactions made can be verified by establishing a user account at ebtpr.com.

The Pandemic EBT is a food assistance approved by the U.S. Congress and the President for students participating in the Department of Education’s School Lunchroom Program for the time schools have been closed for COVID-19 in this 2020-2021 school year.

Each student chosen to benefit received $119.02 per month through the Family Card, which allowed them to purchase unprepared food.
