Wilton Manors Elementary School in Broward, Florida, is at the center of controversy after it was revealed that it took children to an LGBT bar for a field trip.
According to Sarah Leonardi, Broward School Board member for District 3, the school arranged a visit to Rosie’s bar, an establishment that offers “offering amazing food and refreshing drinks and sassy fun,” according to its website.
“Whether you come for lunch or dinner, for Sunday Funday Brunch or for just a few drinks… whether you are LBGTQ+ or an ally…whether you are local or visiting… whether you come with a group or venture out solo… you will have a memorable experience with the most talented crew in South Florida. See you soon!” states the description of Rosie’s.
School board member Leonardi was the one who revealed the controversial Rosie’s excursion on her official Facebook page. The post reads, “I was SO honored to be invited to chaperone Wilton Manors Elementary’s field trip to the incredible Rosie’s! The students and I had a fun walk over and learned a lot about our community! A huge thank you to Rosie’s Bar and Grill for hosting this special field trip every year!”
Quickly, Leonardi’s post caused controversy, generating outrage and criticism in the comment box.
One Facebook user, Kim Rosa-Lima, posted a comment saying that “I guess elementary school has changed? I was a 4th grade teacher for years and I promise you we went to museums, state legislature, parks.”
Another user said, “Menu items at this bar where children were taken for a field trip by Sarah Leonardi (who celebrates the trip here) include dishes called ‘Naked Sweaty Lovin,’ ‘Young Ranch Hand,’ ‘Ivana Hooker,’ and ‘The Big Dripper Wrap’.”
The controversy not only stayed on Facebook, but also moved to Twitter, where thousands of users began criticizing both Leonardi and Wilton Manors Elementary.
A profile called Libs of Tik Tok posted a tweet with four photos denouncing the field trip. The screenshots show Leonardi’s post, a user’s Facebook complaint, a photo of the kids at Rosie’s and the description of the bar.
In another tweet, the Twitter page posted the Rosie’s menu in full, where it can be seen that several of the menu titles contain sexual puns that are inappropriate for elementary school children.
It is unclear what activities the children had inside Rosie’s. El American contacted Sarah Leonardi via Facebook and email for more details about the field trip, but there has not yet been a response.
Broward school at center of controversy
Several media outlets, such as the Daily Caller, picked up on the LGBT bar excursion. Even, the Florida governor’s press secretary, Christina Pushaw, wrote a defiant tweet about it, “What if the Broward school board member took little kids to this bar EXPECTING that some parents would protest, so she could call the FBI and go on MSNBC to discuss all the ‘threatening messages’ she’s received from ‘insurrectionist’ parents?”
Pushaw’s tweet alludes to allegations that the Biden administration is using the FBI to go after parents who oppose school teachings related to gender ideology or Critical Race Theory.
Kyle Mann, the editor-in-chief of satirical outlet The Babylon Bee, tweeted ironically about the field trip to Rosie’s organized by the Broward school.
“We got the state wrong, but I’m still calling this another one of our TheBabylonBee prophecies fulfilled,” Mann said attaching two screenshots: the first is a Babylon Bee note pointing out that a California school took kids on a field trip to a gay bar, the second is about the field trip to Rosie’s.
