David Gergen is an experienced Oval Office insider. He was an official during the presidencies of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, which lends even more weight to his policy analyses, which were recently called upon because of the controversy facing the Biden administration

Following the discovery of classified documents at the president’s residence in Wilmington (Delaware), the White House turned upside down. The documents date back to the Obama-Biden administration and it is not clear what kind of information they contain or who had contact with them.

After all the rhetoric surrounding Donald Trump and the documents at Mar-a-Lago, Biden faced a major political backlash over the findings at his home. Merrick Garland has already appointed a special counsel to oversee the federal investigation into the scandal and it is unknown what may come out of the investigation.

Gergen spoke to CNN about the case and discussed the future of the Biden administration. When asked by host Anderson Cooper how big a mess the president is in, the former official replied, “It’s very, very big.”

“Not legally, but politically. I think they’ve done a wonderful job being cooperative with the government, and they’ve done it, quote, by the book, as they were saying. But I don’t think sitting there, hunkering down now, just acting like it’s not out there, is a good strategy. They’re going to get creamed doing that,” continued Gergen, who served four U.S. presidents.

The author of Hearts Touched with Fire: How Great Leaders are Made was concerned about the way the Biden administration has handled the issue. In his view, it will lead the public to ask, “What are they hiding?”

The material was reportedly found in December by the president’s lawyers in the garage of the house. According to Biden himself, the place was locked since it also housed his prized 1967 Corvette Stingray.

According to Richard Sauber, White House counsel, the president’s legal team searched the house after the discovery. More classified documents were found in January, one located in Biden’s home study.

It is still unclear what the documents contained and whether they were tampered with by unauthorized personnel during their time at the house.
