Search crews searching for victims in the wreckage of Champlain Towers South in Surfside recovered four more bodies, bringing the provisional death toll from the collapse to 90 on Sunday.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced that the number of people missing in the incident now stands at 31, while the number of people located is 217.
Levine Cava clarified that of the 90 fatalities, only 71 have been identified and their families have been notified.
She also reported that the search crews are monitoring the air quality, in view of the possible risk of asbestos at the site, and assured that all those involved in the work are wearing the appropriate equipment.
After 16 difficult days, last Friday the mayor said that she could give at least “small piece of good news”: the recovery of a cat that was found alive and was handed over to its owners.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart and on behalf of our community to the team who played a role in reuniting him with his family,” the mayor stressed.
The latest victims identified include Benny Weisz, 31; Angela Velasquez, 60; Ilan Naybrif, 21; and Leidy Luna, 23, Miami-Dade Police tweeted.
Separately, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed an executive order on Friday “which indefinitely suspends the statutes, and their associated deadlines or requirements, for payment of property taxes for all taxpayers whose property was destroyed or rendered uninhabitable during the collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside, Florida.”
The cause of the residential building collapse is under investigation and a legal battle has already begun seeking damages from some of the residents at Champlain Towers South.
