Biden Administration officials met several years ago with Iran’s foreign minister to “undermine” the Trump Administration’s dealings with Iran, years before Biden took over the White House, reports says.
The Washington Times has revealed that Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif met with Robert Malley, who is now Biden’s special envoy for U.S. policy on Iran, in an attempt to sabotage President Trump’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal. Malley was one of the key architects of the 2015 nuclear deal.
While the exact details of what was discussed in the meetings are unclear, a former senior U.S. official told the news outlet that Zarif’s goal was to “devise a political strategy to undermine the Trump administration.”
The source added that Zarif was seeking to regain support for the Iran nuclear deal, or a similar agreement, should the next U.S. president be a Democrat.
Recently, Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a virtual meeting with three European foreign ministers, to whom he noted that the 2015 nuclear deal was “a key achievement of multilateral diplomacy.”
Secretary Blinken’s remarks somewhat contradict President Biden, who said that Iran must completely stop its uranium enrichment program before new negotiations would be considered.
Iran sees an opportunity with Biden
Joseph Humire, global security analyst and director of the Center for a Secure Free Society told El American that “Iran is looking to recover and sees in Biden an opportunity it can exploit to its advantage.”
Humire considers that, if returning to a nuclear agreement with Iran, the United States must set clear conditions, because if Biden loses the advantage achieved by Trump, he would be “condemning the Middle East to a very dangerous period.”
“The way that agreement was reached with Obama was very bad and irresponsible, with many loopholes, handing over many privileges to Iran and making very little profit and without any guarantees (…) If Biden would like to resume that agreement he has to do it better than in previous years, because the last one only led to more failures,” said Humire.
