President Biden met Tuesday with the family of George Floyd. The meeting was held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death and to discuss the police reform bill.
Biden said that the conviction of former agent Derek Chauvin was a step forward, but “we cannot stop there. He similarly argued that action must be taken. “We face an inflection point.”
In that vein, family lawyer Justin Miller, according to New York Post, expressed frustration after the meeting over the pace of a federal police reform bill that is in a bipartisan negotiation. Miller noted that Biden had just signed a bill aimed at addressing hate crimes against Asians, but had not addressed the racial issue.
What did the Floyd family lawyer say about the police reform bill
“There have been other bills that have been passed in the last three months protecting different groups of people. This group of people needs to be protected too and this started a long time ago. There are some things that started a lot sooner that got protected a lot faster” Miller said.
Agreeing with Miller was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who argued that a bipartisan agreement is needed. “We remain hopeful that we will, in a bipartisan spirit, reach an agreement and enact this legislation,” she tweeted.
On May 25, 2020, the country was shocked after videos were released showing an officer pressing his knee against the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, and being pronounced dead hours later. Derek Chauvin and other officers were arresting the man for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill at a convenience store.
