The United States went from fighting the Taliban to courting them. After the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, the U.S. says the terrorist group has behaved in a “candid and professional” manner when meeting face to face.
The U.S. military ousted the Taliban from power in the fall of 2001 and fought against them for the next 19 years. Now, however, they appear to be working together without the Americans being fully informed.
This Sunday, October 10, State Department spokesman Ned Price reported on meetings in Doha, Qatar, with “senior Taliban representatives.” The report notes that they came to discuss the “provision of robust humanitarian assistance” from the United States to the Afghan people.
The statement released by Price said the “U.S. delegation focused on security and terrorism concerns and safe passage for U.S. citizens, other foreign nationals and our Afghan partners, as well as on human rights, including the meaningful participation of women and girls in all aspects of Afghan society.”
“The discussions were candid and professional with the U.S. delegation reiterating that the Taliban will be judged on its actions, not only its words,” he added.
This is not the first time the Biden administration has used similar language to describe the Taliban since the U.S. left Kabul. National Security Council spokeswoman Emily Horne said in a statement last month that the Taliban were being “cooperative” in allowing Americans to leave Afghanistan.
She added that “they have shown flexibility, and they have been businesslike and professional in our dealings with them in this effort.”
Present at the weekend meetings was the U.S. delegation that included officials from the State Department, USAID and the U.S. intelligence community.
U.S. officials told Reuters news agency that the meetings did not mean Washington was moving to recognize the Taliban government. They said that would depend on whether the Taliban would follow through on its commitments to form an inclusive government, protect women’s rights to work and allow girls to receive education, “among other issues.”
Once again, a kind of alliance is in evidence; it should be remembered that the president of the United States did not report that there was coordination with the Taliban, to the point of giving them a list of citizens who were in Afghanistan, so that they would allow their departure from Kabul.
