If the Republican Party has its sights set on reclaiming the Senate majority in November, one of the most important races is Georgia. Herschel Walker will have the difficult task of unseating Raphael Warnock, who will seek a full term after triumphing in the 2021 special election.

Since April, the incumbent senator had shown a slight but marked superiority in the polls. However, the last three polls show the former American football player as the winner.

The first of these was one conducted by Emerson College, which showed Walker with 46% of the vote and Warnock with 44%.

Walker leads Warnock among rural voters 58% to 24%, while Warnock leads Walker 66% to 25% among urban voters. In the suburbs, voters are breaking for Walker by a nine-point margin, 50% to 41%,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said of the poll in a press release.

For its part, Insider Advantage found that the Republican leads the Democrat by three percentage points, 47% to 44%. “Warnock appears to have lost four points while Walker picked up two points since July’s poll,” the pollster said.

Walker has the support of Donald Trump and also of the Republican establishment, represented by Mitch McConnell and John Thune, among others.

Finally, Trafalgar Group confirmed the positive trend for the ex-athlete, who once again surpasses his opponent, this time by one point. This last survey has a particular relevance, given that its sample had a majority of Democrats and women. At the same time, 30% of the respondents were African-American.

Despite these polls, the fact remains that the Senate race in Georgia promises to be one of the closest of the cycle. Interestingly, this is the first election for the Georgia State Senate’s history in which both candidates are African American.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this article wrongly claimed that Walker was a soccer player. Herschel Walker is a former football player.
